What actually happened

The restrictions arrived in two steps. First, from August 2025, voice and video calls stopped connecting for many people in Russia while chat kept working. Then, on 12 February 2026, WhatsApp was blocked altogether: the app stops opening, messages hang on a single tick, photos and voice notes refuse to load. A state-backed messenger is being promoted instead.

The important part: this is not a broken phone. The app is fine and your account and chats are still there — the restriction sits on the way between your device and WhatsApp's servers.

In short: for some people WhatsApp does not open at all, for others messages go through every other time and calls never connect. The cause is the same, and reinstalling the app will not remove it.

Check the simple things first

Before changing anything, spend a minute on the quick checks — sometimes the cause is on the phone after all:

Close WhatsApp completely and open it again. Then restart the phone — that clears random hangs.
Check the internet: open any site or video. If they don't load either, it is a question for your connection or Wi-Fi, not for WhatsApp.
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the other way round) and try calling again.
Update WhatsApp to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
